What is Löyly?
Löyly (pronounced roughly LUH-luu) is the steam and experience of the sauna — created when water is thrown on hot stones. But that's just the surface.
In Finnish culture, löyly is the wave of heat that hits your body, the quality of the sauna experience, and historically — even the life force of the sauna itself.
Old Finnish belief held that a good sauna had good löyly. The sauna itself had a henki (spirit), and löyly was its breath. When Finns argue about saunas, they're arguing about löyly — not temperature.
